Today's Shared Google Reader Items, 11/5

Here's the latest batch of shared items:
  • XKCD had a great summary of how I felt, especially in the secert mouseover-for-another-punchline part. To make the mouseover joke make as much sense as possible, Nate Silver is the guy who runs 538.com, and accurately predicted the popular vote to within 0.1% either way.
  • I agree with my friend Jeff's plan for Gloat Day. I'll be civil tomorrow. Today, Republicans can suck it.
  • In that vein, Paul Krugman's article about monsters was great. You people are evil, dammit. We aren't gonna take it anymore. You have the gall to say we're not "real Americans," but you're the morons supporting torture. You're the morons working against science. Real Americans are for freedom and progress, they aren't defined by whether they live in a city or not.
  • I also loved Krugman's map of the Dem/GOP shift this year from 2004. Kentucky scares me, though. Seriously, you're even redder now? You realize you're voting against your interests, right??
  • Finally, I love this photo of the results of the most important election of the night. Mmmmm, Bacon (D-CO).
As always, comment below. I promise no politics tomorrow. Then I'll start working on my Kirk Watson 2010 campaign.

Me too! :)

I'm pretty sure I'm going to break that "no politics" promise tomorrow. Too many funny things are coming in today. Turns out Sarah may have been even worse than we all thought, and the McCain campaign knew it. Vote Palin 2012 (in the primary ONLY, for the love of the FSM)!

re #1 - Obama 52.4, McCain 46.3
I'm a bit surprised that the numbers spread this far apart. During election eve I was seeing it more at the 51 - 48 split. In any case, it means that almost half of Americans (voters anyway) don't want Obama and will generally feel that their interests are not represented. This of course was true in the last two elections which were even closer, but the shoe was on the other foot so to speak. I wonder if we really have such a bipolar population? Why isn't the split 60 - 40 or even 70 - 30?

re #5 - "You can’t defeat bacon."
Over on Pharyngula someone noted that from their experience the one thing that caused most vegetarians to slip was bacon. Mmmmm... bacon and eggs, bacon burgers, bacon bits on baked potatos, BLTs. I love being an omnivore.

I really expected this one to be a wider margin once it came down to the wire. I figured once it was fairly clear that Obama was going to win there'd be a "Well, I want to be able to say I voted for him" bandwagon.

If he does as well as I hope he can, the split may widen significantly in 2012. Reagan won 50.7% to 41.0% (8%) in 1980, for example, and then 58.8% to 40.6% (18%) in 1984. I'm hoping to see a good 60-40 or 70-30, but I'm not expecting it... yet...
